Animating in the original tones
Hello Once More animates the image you send. Send a black-and-white scan and that is the starting point; nothing is colorized as part of a standard order. AI video models can occasionally shift the tone slightly as they generate new frames, so watch the delivered film from start to finish and compare it with your scan.
If keeping the original tones matters to you, mention it in the optional note when you order. If you would rather have a color portrait, colorization is a separate job done before animation, and it is not included. Our restore, colorize, or animate guide explains the difference.
Preparing a monochrome scan
- Scan or photograph the print in color mode, even if it looks gray. A sepia or toned print keeps its warmth that way, and you can always make a grayscale copy later. Tone discarded during scanning cannot be added back.
- Save that untouched file as your master copy before you change anything.
- Make a working copy. If the print has faded, lift the contrast gently, watching the eyes and mouth. Pushing it too far can turn soft shadows into hard black patches.
- Skip one-click “restore” or “enhance” filters on the master. Some of them smooth skin or reshape features.
- Save the working copy as a JPG or PNG with at least 512 pixels on each side, and compare it with the master at full size.
Matching the approach to the print
| The print | What to send | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Crisp black-and-white | A plain scan, color or grayscale | Usually animates in its original tones without any adjustment. |
| Sepia or toned | A color-mode scan | The brown or blue tone is part of the photograph; a grayscale scan removes it. |
| Faded, low contrast | A copy with gentle contrast added | Animation does not fix fading. A small adjustment helps the face read clearly. |
| Hand-tinted | A color-mode scan | The painted tints are original. They are not the same as modern AI colorization. |
What to expect from the film
Black-and-white photographs often come from studio sittings with formal poses and neutral expressions. A gentle change, such as the eyes lifting or the beginning of a smile, may suit them better than a large gesture. That is a reasonable starting point, not a rule; a person reviewing the photograph chooses movement that fits the image you send.
Older studio prints were often sharp, but small prints and copies of copies may not be. If the face is soft, read our guide to blurry photos before you order.
